The “big picture” view of why we have inside recess

Other parts of the country/world may be having  the warmest winters on record (e.g. Alaska), but in Minnesota the jet stream keeps buckling and dipping way south allowing arctic air to put us into some deep freezes.  This picture by NASA shows why we’ve had so many inside recesses this winter–even the Great Lakes are freezing close to record amounts:
